#1 WHO IS FRANK NELTE?
I attended the Bricket Wood campus of Ambassador College in the 1960's and was hired by the Worldwide Church of God upon graduation in 1971. The Church transferred me to South Africa where I pastored several congregations until I was suspended in February 1994 for objecting to the doctrinal changes that were being introduced. Since that time I have written numerous articles in response to both, doctrinal changes that continued to be introduced, and also to specific questions that were put to me.
Back to Top#2 WHAT AUDIENCE ARE YOUR ARTICLES ADDRESSED TO?
My articles are not addressed to the general public. All of my articles are written from the perspective of people who have some background in the Worldwide Church of God during Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong's time, or the organizations that have sprung from that church. If you don't have any past association with either WCG or its offshoots, then some things in some of my articles may be more difficult to understand.
Back to Top#3 DO YOU BELIEVE THE THINGS Mr. ARMSTRONG TAUGHT?
When I went to Ambassador, I determined to prove for myself everything I would believe. My approach to any question is to assume that everything I learned is correct EXCEPT where I can prove that it is in fact in error. Many of my articles uphold and defend the things Mr. Armstrong taught, because I am still convinced that Mr. Armstrong was correct in those areas. In other areas, especially those involving prophetic understanding of yet future events, I am now convinced that Mr. Armstrong was not correct, and in those areas I clearly disagree with the things Mr. Armstrong believed and taught 35 and more years ago now.
Back to Top#4 I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT YOU FREQUENTLY CONTRADICT YOURSELF IN DIFFERENT ARTICLES. IS THIS TRUE?
There is no question that I have changed my mind on a number of things over the past 25 years or so. When I come to what I believe is a better understanding on any subject, that may at times be a contradiction to what I previously believed and wrote about. Like everyone else, you included, I believe I have the right to change my mind as I grow in knowledge and in understanding. My articles are not "written in stone". I don't send out old articles with views that I no longer believe are accurate. However, that does not mean that you won't be able to find the occasional reference to something in my older articles (e.g. older articles in which I refer to 2 Timothy 3:16, etc.) that no longer reflects my present understanding as expounded in a more recent article. It is simply not possible for me to alter every reference in every previous article, whenever I happen to come to a better understanding about a specific Scripture. THAT IS WHY I HAVE DATED ALL MY ARTICLES, so that the reader can evaluate any statements in their appropriate time context. Overall, the areas where I have changed my mind as a result of a better understanding represent only a small minority of the subjects I have written about in the past 25 years. And keep in mind that you too have the right to change your mind whenever you come to a better understanding about any particular issue.
Back to Top#5 EVERYBODY HAS A BIAS. WHAT IS YOURS?
Yes, I also have a bias. My bias is that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. In any conflict between what the Bible says and what some person may say or assert, my bias is to accept the views expressed in the Bible as correct. I believe that there is an explanation for every so-called "contradiction" in the Bible. Also, in any conflict between "the traditions of the Church" that I was taught and what the Bible clearly states, again my bias is to accept the Bible and to reject traditions. A simple example of this is in the matter of Feast offerings: Church tradition says "seven" but the Bible says "three" ... it follows that I believe in "three" and not in "seven" on this subject.
Back to Top#6 HOW DO YOU APPROACH EXPLAINING THE SCRIPTURES?
My first goal is to establish what the Scripture in question actually does say. For the Old Testament that involves examining the Hebrew text and for the New Testament that involves examining the Greek text. Once I have the text in those languages, then I examine the meaning of every word in that Scripture. With so-called "difficult Scriptures" it often turns out that the English language editions we are accustomed to relying on are to some degree or other misleading or inaccurate. Next, I try to establish whether God intended us to view the content of the Scripture in question literally, or whether it is allegorical or whether it involves some common figure of speech.
Back to Top#7 WHY ARE THERE SUCH INACCURATE TRANSLATIONS?
The English editions of the Bible we today have access to are relatively recent in origin; they stem mostly from the last 400 years. Before that time for over 1000 years the Latin language Vulgate Translation by Jerome was the only version of the Bible available in Europe. Many of the difficult and awkward translations of certain verses can be led back directly to the Latin Vulgate Version, or even to the Greek language LXX version of the Old Testament. These two versions were major source documents for the early English language translations. In every single English language version of the Bible that I have seen (about 40) there is SOME evidence of the influence of the Latin Vulgate Version, even in those versions that are "based on" the Hebrew and the Greek texts. In all of those instances such "influence" from the Vulgate version actually OBSCURES the intended meaning to some degree, and in some cases it has resulted in completely misleading translations into the English language text.
Back to Top#8 ARE YOU AN AUTHORITY ON THE HEBREW AND GREEK LANGUAGES, BECAUSE YOU QUITE OFTEN QUOTE TEXTS IN THESE TWO LANGUAGES?
No, I am not "an authority" on these biblical languages. What is important is not how much I may or may not know. What is important is that I know where to find information that IS accurate, from sources that are indeed "authorities" in these languages. The things I state regarding the Hebrew or Greek text of a specific verse should be judged as to whether or not they are factual and objectively correct. If what I say is correct, then my level of competence in Hebrew and in Greek is of no consequence and in no way affects the meaning of any given Scripture. I did study Latin for four years in high school, and although that is about 60 years ago, it is still of some help in now examining Jerome's Latin translation.
Back to Top#9 I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO START YOUR OWN CHURCH. IS THIS TRUE?
No, that is certainly not true! I have consistently turned those who have looked to me for guidance and leadership towards those Church-of-God organizations that I believed would be able to assist them with their spiritual lives. I have done this because I realize that, while I can help with answering questions and helping people to understand certain difficult biblical concepts, I am not in a position to pastor a group of people who are scattered around the world, given the clear understanding that God has not called me to start another church organization.
Back to Top#10 SO WHAT ARE THE PEOPLE WHO CONTACT YOU FOR GUIDANCE AND FOR TEACHINGS SUPPOSED TO DO?
I believe that I have a responsibility to make knowledge and understanding about the Bible available to those who contact me for that purpose. When I have done my best to make understanding available, then I believe that I have fulfilled my responsibility. It is not my responsibility whether someone accepts or rejects the information I have provided. I have never felt a pressure to somehow get as many people as possible to accept the things I have written. People need to always evaluate everything they read (from any and every author) for themselves, as ultimately we ourselves are responsible for the things we believe and the things we don't believe. The people of God are today clearly in a state of being scattered. In most cases I see no reason to encourage people to leave the particular Church-of-God organization they are attending. Since the split-up of the Worldwide Church of God I have not yet come across a single organization that I believe is "more right than all the others". The things I explain in my articles are in most cases independent of the particular fellowship someone may be attending. Ultimately a person's salvation does not depend on the particular Church-of-God fellowship the person happens to be attending, but on the character the person has developed over a period of time. Ultimately every single one of us has to prove to God that we are going to be absolutely and unconditionally trustworthy before God, that God can indeed "have faith" in the character we have developed. So, unless people for some reason or other become uncomfortable with the organization they are currently a part of, I would recommend that people continue in the Church-of-God fellowship they are currently attending. If people become frustrated or upset with the fellowship they are attending, then it seems to me that they should consider looking for another group with whom they are going to be more comfortable. But I don't really know in which group they would feel "more at home"? And in some cases such people drift through any number of CoG organizations. Some eventually find a spiritual home, while others seemingly never do?
Back to Top#11 CAN I SEND YOU MY QUESTIONS?
Yes, you certainly can. On the opening page simply access the "Requests for Scripture Explanations" button for the email address to which to send your questions. However, there is only one of me, and I cannot guarantee that I will ever get around to answering all the questions that are sent to me. I realize that this sounds rather harsh, but it is a reality of life for me that I simply am not able to reply to all the emails I receive. When I am traveling I sometimes do not see my emails for several weeks at a time, and then I struggle to get up-to-date . I understand that this is often rather frustrating for those looking for answers, but I would rather be bluntly honest up front. Having said this, I do try my best to reply to most questions sent to me. If your question is already addressed in something I have previously written, I will try to refer you to the article in question.
Back to Top#12 SINCE YOU HAVE ALREADY WRITTEN SO MANY ARTICLES, HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE ALREADY ADDRESSED MY PARTICULAR QUESTION?
Use the "SEARCH BOX" located on the upper left side of the Opening Page. Searching for Scriptures or words in any of my articles involves two distinct steps. STEP 1: From the drop-down menu select one of the six choices: English Search words, Scriptures to Search for, Hebrew Search words, Greek Search words, Biblical Names & Meanings, and Jewish Terms & Meanings. Once you have made your choice here, then type in the word you wish to search for in the box (e.g. "faith") immediately below this drop-down menu. Then click on "Find Now". A "Search Results" window will open, listing all the articles in which your search word appears (e.g. for "faith" that would be about 100 different articles). STEP 2: You then select any article of your choice from the list of search results and click on it. The article will open and you then use the Windows Internet Explorer feature to find all instances of your search word in that particular article. Go to "the EDIT menu" and then select "FIND ON THIS PAGE". In the box that opens again type in your search word (e.g. "faith"). As you type the search results will be highlighted. The "NEXT" and "PREVIOUS" buttons allow you to find all occurrences of your search word. The Biblical Names and the Jewish Terms provide definitions without any reference to my writings. You may also find some useful information in the "RESEARCH CENTER" on the Home Page. A number of drop-down menus offer various choices. By first doing your own search and by using this Research Center directory before you send in a question, you can eliminate some of the frustration you might experience if you have to wait some time for an answer, as in many cases you may find your question answered in one of the articles I have already written.
Back to Top#13 CAN I MAKE SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE ARTICLES?
You certainly can. Go to the "Suggestions for Future Articles" button on the opening page for the email address to which to direct all such suggestions. Again, I obviously cannot guarantee that I will ever write on every suggestion received. But at the same time it is also a fact that many of the articles I have already written are the direct result of questions and suggestions that were put to me.
Back to Top#14 WHERE CAN I FIND FACTUAL INFORMATION ABOUT NEW MOON TIMES AND ALSO SUNSET TIMES?
You can use the Research Center, and the sub-menu "Some Useful Resources" to find this information. A number of different sources make this information available. Some of these sources are: the US Naval Observatory, NASA, free software programs like the Online Bible and Calendar Magic, etc.
Back to Top#15 I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A COPY OF ALL OF THE ARTICLES POSTED ON THIS WEBSITE. DO I HAVE TO DOWNLOAD ALL OF THEM OVER THE INTERNET OR IS THERE SOME OTHER WAY FOR ME TO OBTAIN THEM?
For those who wish to obtain all of the articles, the best way is to download them from the website to your own computer. I am no longer in a position to make CD's for website visitors. However, the best way I would suggest is this: Under "General Information" go to "What's New". There you will find in date order all the articles I have written since 2010. That's the last 110+ articles. Then download all the ones that interest you. So, yes, you will have to download them yourself from my website.
Back to Top#16 WHAT BIBLE SOFTWARE DO YOU RECOMMEND?
I have used the "ONLINE BIBLE" produced by Larry Pierce for about 30 years. I personally am convinced that it is the best Bible software available anywhere, with numerous translations, dictionaries, commentaries and other utilities (including a calendar program for new moons) included in the package. The ONLINE BIBLE has the best search features of any Bible software that I have used. And therefore it remains the primary Bible software I use. It is available free for downloading from a number of different websites. A few of the translations included are only available upon payment of a royalty fee, but the vast majority of the translations and other works are free. For more details click on "Useful Resources" in the Research Center. For additional Biblical resources I also use two additional free Bible software packages. They are: "E-SWORD" and "THE WORD". Both of these are very useful programs which include certain valuable resources not found in the ONLINE BIBLE program. These two are also listed under "Useful Resources". Between these three free Bible software programs I have over 100 different versions / translations of the Bible on my computer, in addition to all the major Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Greek lexicons. However, because of its powerful easy-to-use search abilities the ONLINE BIBLE firmly remains my primary tool for Biblical research.
Back to Top#17 I HAVE A FRIEND WHO DOES NOT HAVE A COMPUTER AND WHO WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE YOUR ARTICLES. DO YOU SEND OUT PRINTED COPIES OF YOUR ARTICLES?
No, I am not able to send out any printed copies of my articles. I don't have the finances or the facilities to send out printed material. So unless you yourself are able to help your friend with printed copies of the articles I do not know of a way to get the material to your friend. The only ways I have of disseminating the articles I write are via this webpage and via my email mailing list for all new articles for those people who request to be added to this list.
Back to Top#18 CAN I SEND DONATIONS TO YOU TO SUPPORT YOUR WORK?
I would prefer if you don't try to send money to me, even if it is totally unsolicited. This is further explained in the "Mission Statement" you can access from the opening page.
Back to Top#19 DO YOU CONDUCT WEEKLY CHURCH SERVICES THAT I CAN ATTEND OR AT LEAST ACCESS OVER THE PHONE OR OVER THE INTERNET?
Not really. I have at times conducted a Feast of Tabernacles or services or Bible Studies for a few people who really had nowhere else to go. However, in most cases I see no reason why people should try to leave the Church-of-God organization they are attending in order to try to "attend with me". Okay, so none of the Church-of-God organizations around are perfect and all of them have certain flaws, but then neither am I perfect or without flaws. It always boils down to WHICH flaws you are looking at. I don't know that anyone would be better off "trying to attend with me" as opposed to attending with one of most of the Church-of-God organizations around today. Where I believe I am able to contribute to God's people with knowledge and understanding, I try to make this available by way of the articles I write. I don't have additional information that I somehow reserve for "sermons to some in-group". Mostly I don't make audio recordings of the sermons I do at times give, so I don't have any audio tapes or audio CD's to send out. Understand that with any sermon you hear it is NOT primarily what the speaker says that is of value! The thing that is primarily of real value is YOUR MINDSET when you hear (or read) that sermon. The same sermon can be of immense value to one person and a total waste of time for the next person ... even when that "next person" later dutifully tells the minister what a great sermon that was. It is always the frame of mind of THE LISTENER that is the key to any value of what is said, rather than the words of the speaker. God is the greatest "Speaker" around, and most people on earth today don't derive any value from what God has said ... because they don't have the frame of mind that would allow them to benefit from God's words. So don't be concerned about trying to attend "with me", as if that would somehow bring you closer to God ... it wouldn't. Rather examine your mindset and make sure that it is right before God.
Back to Top#20 A FRIEND TOLD ME ABOUT SOME ARTICLES YOU HAD WRITTEN, BUT I CAN'T FIND THEM HERE ON THIS WEBSITE. WHERE CAN I GET THOSE ARTICLES THAT ARE NOT POSTED ON THIS WEBSITE?
Not from me! When around 1994 I first started writing against the doctrinal changes that WCG was introducing, I didn't understand many of the things I now understand much more clearly. I have always written from the perspective of the things I understood at the time of writing. In a few instances the passage of time has resulted in a clearer understanding on certain issues, and that has resulted in articles that don't fully agree with what I had written earlier. I see no reason to continue to send out articles that no longer accurately reflect what I believe. The sheer volume of the articles that are posted on this website, currently amounting to over 7,000 pages of text, should make clear that the ones I prefer to no longer make available represent a very small minority of the total number of articles I have written.
Back to Top#21 I HAVE READ SOME OF YOUR ARTICLES AND I DISAGREE WITH SOME THINGS YOU HAVE SAID. CAN I SEND YOU MY COMMENTS FOR FURTHER DISCUSSION?
You certainly can send your comments to the Webmaster. If you find factual errors in any of the articles, I will try to correct those errors. But if it is a matter of disagreeing with an explanation that I have provided, then in most cases I am not in a position to enter into any kind of discussion. As already stated, every reader of my articles should evaluate the information I present for himself or for herself. I realize in advance that many people will not accept the things I have written. That's no problem to me. But I do not have the means or the time to enter into discussions with every reader of my articles. Again, I try to respond where I feel it is appropriate and where I have the time available to do so.
Back to Top#22 I HAVE COME INTO CONTACT WITH CERTAIN CHURCH-OF-GOD ORGANIZATIONS, WHO I BELIEVE ARE IN ERROR IN SOME OF THEIR DOCTRINAL IDEAS. CAN YOU GIVE ME YOUR IMPRESSIONS OR EVALUATION OF THEIR DOCTRINES?
I don't believe it is my job or responsibility to evaluate any Church-of-God organization as to their merits or their short-comings. I am not here to criticize any specific organization. My responsibility is to focus on what the Bible teaches. In some cases a doctrinal error exists across organizational boundaries and then I may highlight the flaws in that specific teaching or practice. The Jewish calendar, which is accepted by most of the Church-of-God organizations, is a case in point. But in most cases I prefer to focus on explaining what is right before God, rather than trying to explain where "organization XYZ" is wrong. That leaves it up to you to make your own comparisons and to draw your own conclusions.
Back to Top#23 I HAVE A BOOK (or Booklet or Article) WHICH MAKES SOME VERY INTERESTING POINTS. I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN HEARING WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THE INFORMATION PRESENTED IN THIS BOOK. CAN I SEND IT TO YOU FOR YOU TO READ AND THEN TO GIVE ME YOUR COMMENTS ON IT?
I would rather that you don't send it to me. There is a good chance that I will never get around to reading the whole book; I know this from the books and booklets (and articles and audio tapes, etc.) that have already been sent to me over the past 25 years. As far as reading is concerned, I already have more on my plate than I can cope with. There is just one of me. And I prefer to here give the honest answer rather than the one that would be politically correct. I can only do so much.
Back to Top#24 WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "FOCUS ARTICLE" ON THE OPENING SCREEN OF YOUR WEB PAGE?
There are a large number of people who used to attend God's Church at one time in the past, and who today do not attend with any fellowship. But they have not rejected God's laws and God's ways. They have simply become somewhat disillusioned, and don't really know with whom they should or could fellowship. The "Focus Article" feature of this website is intended to be a service to people in that situation, people who are still trying to faithfully live by God's laws, but they have no one to fellowship with. People in that situation are encouraged to make the "Focus Article" the subject of their study for that particular week. They could use it specifically for the Sabbath, if they have no one else to fellowship with. It is a daunting task for anyone to know where to start with the over 360 articles, making up over 7,000 pages of text, that are available on this website. So with the "Focus Article" feature I will try to highlight a different article each week. The subjects are very randomly selected, and in the course of a year many different subjects will be covered by these Focus Articles.
Back to Top#25 HOW CAN I QUICKLY SEE A LIST OF ALL YOUR MOST RECENT ARTICLES, TO CHECK IF I HAVE MISSED ANY?
From the "GENERAL INFORMATION" drop-down menu select "WHAT'S NEW". You will see a list in date order of all my articles since 2010.
Back to Top#26 WHERE CAN I FIND OUT THE MEANING OF BIBLICAL NAMES?
In the "Research Center" select "Biblical Names and Their Meanings". I suggest that you first read the Introduction to this section. This introduction explains why you will at times find some rather conflicting claims for certain biblical names. Then select the letter of your choice and scroll down to the name that you are looking for.
Back to Top#27 I HAVE COME ACROSS SOME STRANGE WORDS IN EXAMINING THE TALMUD. WHERE CAN I FIND OUT WHAT THESE WORDS MEAN?
In the "Research Center" select "Jewish Terms and Their Meanings". For first time users I suggest you first read the "Introduction" in that section, as it provides some general background to such words. Then select the letter of your choice and scroll through the list until you reach the word you are looking for. If the word you are looking for is NOT contained in the list, then please send the word to me via the webmaster, so that I can then add it to the list. Tell me where you came across this word to help me find an example of the word in question.
Back to Top#28 YOU HAVE WRITTEN A LOT AGAINST THE USE OF THE JEWISH CALENDAR. HOW CAN I FIND OUT HOW THE JEWISH CALENDAR IS ACTUALLY ESTABLISHED?
Select the "JEWISH CALENDAR TUTORIAL" menu at the top of the Home Page, and then select the "GENERAL INTRODUCTION" drop-down menu option. That will give you some general information. After that you can do any of the tutorial examples, to learn for yourself how the Jewish Calendar is established. The tutorials take the mystery out of the Jewish calendar. It is not difficult to calculate the Jewish calendar, and all the mathematical calculations are done for you. When you have worked through those examples you will understand how the present Jewish Calendar is established.
Back to Top#29 DO YOU SEE SOME KIND OF PROPHETIC ROLE FOR YOURSELF?
No, I don't believe that I am supposed to fulfill any kind of prophetic role. This subject is also further discussed in "THE MISSION STATEMENT" section.
Back to Top#30 HAVE YOU EVER HAD ANY DREAMS OR VISIONS?
No, I have never had any dreams of any religious significance, or any personal significance for that matter. And I have never had any visions. All my explanations of the Scriptures are based solely on examining the biblical texts that apply to those particular subjects.
Back to Top#31 ENGLISH IS NOT MY HOME LANGUAGE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE EXPRESSIONS YOU USE IN YOUR ARTICLES. HOW CAN I CORRECTLY UNDERSTAND SUCH EXPRESSIONS?
